Checklist for Winterizing Your Roof

Checklist for Winterizing Your Roof

Your winter checklist may look something like this:

  • Purchase a new “lucky” Chiefs sweatshirt that will surely get them to the playoffs (and beyond).
  • Buy wood for your firepit – plus plenty of marshmallows for roasting.
  • Make sure you have everything you need to make your famous four-alarm chili, the dish that made you a legend among your neighbors and friends.

While you probably won’t have any issues completing the preceding checklist, we have a more grown-up list that homeowners need to complete before winter begins.

Checklist for Winterizing Your Roof

Hopefully, you’ve already winterized your sprinkler system and changed your furnace filter. But, here are some more tasks that you need to complete – to extend the life of your roof. But, don’t worry – we’ll also give you advice on making these tasks go as easily as possible.

  • Cut back overhanging tree limbs.
Prevent damage to your roof by removing overhanging tree limbs – even those that look healthy. These limbs can crash down on your roof due to high winds or under the weight of heavy snow and ice.

Of course, you may consider leaving this job to the professionals since homeowners across the country suffer serious injuries each year trying to do limb removal independently. So get on your tree trimmer’s list as soon as possible – it’s a busy time of year for them!

  • Clean your gutters.
The purpose of your gutters is to remove damaging moisture from your roof and foundation as quickly and efficiently as possible. This won’t happen if your gutters and downspouts are clogged with leaves.

Are you sick of cleaning your gutters? Integrity Roofing offers gutter protection products such as gutter guards. We’ll recommend a system that works on your existing gutters or recommend and install an entirely new gutter system for your home. Integrity is a one-stop-shop for all your exterior home renovation needs.

  • Check the insulation in your attic.
At last – a task that doesn’t require you to climb a ladder on a cold autumn day! One thing that many homeowners fail to do is to complete a yearly check on their attic insulation.

Remove any insulation that appears moldy, and make sure it is evenly distributed across the space. Be mindful that the insulation doesn’t block vents, and consider adding some more to save on your energy bills.

  • Contact Integrity to perform a professional roof inspection.
The only way to get an accurate picture of the condition of your roof is to inspect it visually. While we know that many do-it-yourselfers enjoy completing their own winterizing projects, we encourage you to get the help of professionals for this task.

Integrity Roofing is one of the top roof contractors in Kansas City, Overland Park, Johnson County, Warrensburg, Lee’s Summit, and the surrounding Kansas City Metro areas. We are happy to complete a professional roof inspection to ensure it is ready to protect your home from harsh Midwestern winter weather.
